Goa's monuments like those elsewhere tell the story of Goa's
1000 year history. A lot of them have been built by the erstwhile Portuguese regime and
are remnants of a colonial past. The really ancient ones that date to the
pre-Portuguese era are but a handful largely because of systematic destruction by the
Portuguese and early Muslim invaders.
Most of the monuments listed are protected and cared for by
the Goa Government and also by the Archaeological Survey of India, who also maintain the Archaeological Museum
